First visit · 3–4 nights
Vilnius centre / Old Town edge. Walk the historic core, use public transport for the gaps, and keep the first day car‑free.
A €20 saving is not clever if it creates two taxi rides a day. Lithuania is compact enough that the right base can remove whole transfers — especially when your arrival airport and departure airport are different.
This is about geography and daily friction, not sponsored ranking.
Vilnius centre / Old Town edge. Walk the historic core, use public transport for the gaps, and keep the first day car‑free.
Central Kaunas / Laisvės alėja side. Modernism, food, museums and the station corridor are close enough that a car becomes optional rather than compulsory.
Finish in Kaunas. Do not keep a Vilnius hotel out of habit and manufacture a predawn cross‑country transfer. This is exactly why the planner now understands open‑jaw trips.
Nida if the Spit is a chapter, not a photo stop. One or two nights changes the experience because the best hours are before and after the day‑trip traffic.
Birštonas or Druskininkai as the base. Sleep where the evening is. A spa town works because dinner, walking and recovery do not require another drive.
With children: Druskininkai is one of the few places where the exact hotel can materially change the adults’ holiday: some properties publish real supervised-room / nanny rules rather than merely advertising a play corner. See the verified family options →
Use destination stays deliberately. TonyResort, Harmony Park or Panemunė can make sense when the room removes a return drive and turns dinner into part of the route. Do not commute to an overnight experience.

Best default for a first visit. You pay for being able to walk out of the door and start the day. Avoid paying a premium merely to be 180 metres closer to Cathedral Square; the centre is compact.
Best when trains, buses or value matter. Useful for an early intercity departure and often better value than the postcard core. Check the exact street rather than judging the whole district by an old reputation.
Only when the flight time earns it. VNO is close enough to central Vilnius that a normal morning flight is not a reason to spend your final evening beside a runway.
Best all-round. Food, modernism, museums and the Old Town are connected by a walk rather than a logistics plan.
Best for rail-heavy trips and early movement. Kaunas Bus Station and Railway Station are close enough to make this a practical choice without putting you outside the city.
Choose it because the stay is the experience. If you will taxi back to the centre for every meal and evening, you have bought scenery and rented a transport problem.
Open-jaw rule
If you arrive at VNO, travel through Lithuania and fly home from KUN, finishing in Kaunas is a feature, not a compromise. The reverse works too. The planner already uses this rule unless you explicitly tell it otherwise.
Vilnius is mostly a location decision. Birštonas is a product decision.

Vytautas, ESĖ, LAJOS and Royal do different jobs. Harmony Park is not a fifth city hotel; it is a countryside destination that can replace the town as the centre of the trip.
The catch: €2 in town, €1 just outside it — your hotel will know which. The bigger catches are product-specific — timed SPA access, age limits, a Mind SPA that is not a traditional pool complex, or a countryside location.
Four products sharing one resort name.

Grand SPA, SPA VILNIUS, MANA Sleep & Spa and Europa Royale solve different holidays. The catches are operational — advance treatments, opening hours, or simply spending so much time inside that you forget the town exists.
The catch: €2 per adult per night; children under 18 are exempt.
Pines, full SPA, medical wellness or a central family apartment.

Pušų paunksnėje, Life Balance, Gradiali and MANA Suites & Sea do different jobs. Their catches matter more than another half-point on a review score: children’s SPA hours, timed wet-zone access and location.
The catch: €2 per adult per night; children under 18 are exempt.
How many times will you need a taxi/bus just to begin or end an ordinary sightseeing day?
A 06:00 flight changes the value of location far more than a free welcome drink.
In central Vilnius or Kaunas, a car can be dead weight for the first day. Do not pay for infrastructure you deliberately will not use.
Historic buildings can be charming right up to the third-floor staircase with two suitcases. If mobility or stairs matter, verify the actual room/building — not just the hotel’s general accessibility icon.
The “cheapest” rate stops being cheap when flight plans move. Compare the cancellation terms as part of the price.
Trust layer
This is an editorial base guide, checked 11 September 2026. It deliberately does not rank individual hotels or quote hotel prices: inventory, room type and cancellation terms change continuously. The location logic is tied to the transport and destination guides on this site.
No paid ranking: if accommodation affiliate links are added later, payment will not change the editorial verdict about where a traveller should base themselves.
A hotel optimises travel days. An apartment can optimise ordinary Tuesdays.
Kitchen, laundry, workspace, Wi‑Fi and parking start carrying more value as the stay grows. Airbnb hosts can set weekly discounts from 7 nights and monthly discounts from 28 nights. That is a reason to compare — not a promise that Airbnb will be cheaper.

The more expensive mistake is giving the wrong place the night. The Handbook chooses the base first, then asks what the room is supposed to do.
Trip Build and €99 support both include the complete Handbook at no extra cost.
