1–2 NOVEMBER · REMEMBRANCE · RESPECT FIRST
Vėlinės: Lithuania lights the dark
one grave at a time.
There are louder Lithuanian traditions and easier ones to photograph. Few are more affecting. On the first two nights of November, remembrance becomes visible across the country.
Go to a cemetery after dark if you are already in Lithuania on 1–2 November. Go quietly. Do not treat mourners as local colour. The candlelight is extraordinary precisely because nobody arranged it for you.
What is happening
Millions of small lights, almost no need for a stage.
1 November is All Saints’ Day; 2 November is Vėlinės / the Day of Remembrance of the Dead. Both are public holidays in Lithuania. Families clean and visit graves, bring flowers and light candles. Older customs also imagined the dead returning closer to the household at this time, which is why Vėlinės connect surprisingly closely with the ancestral layer of Kūčios.
Rasos Cemetery.
Historically significant and visually powerful after dark. Expect many visitors and difficult parking around major cemeteries.
Petrašiūnai and local cemeteries.
You do not need a famous cemetery. The national experience is the repeated glow across towns, villages and family graves.
Be present, not performative.
Keep voices low, give families space, stay on paths, never step across graves and avoid close-up photography of people mourning.
Cold hands are very plausible.
November is dark, damp and often near freezing at night. Gloves matter because standing outside among candles is much less poetic once your fingers stop negotiating.
This is not a festival recommendation in the usual sense.
It is one of the strongest cultural experiences a visitor can encounter in Lithuania, but the visitor is a guest beside a private act of remembrance. That distinction is the entire rulebook.
Sources & checks
Tradition deserves the same fact-checking as train times.
Trust rule: fixed public-holiday dates and historical customs are desk-verified. Event programmes, opening hours and one-off city schedules can change; where a future programme is not yet published, this guide says so instead of inventing one.
Do not travel to Vėlinės looking for entertainment. But if you are in Lithuania, do not miss the chance to understand it. The sight is beautiful; the reason for it matters more.

The calendar should improve the route, not take it hostage.
Dates and events stay live on the site. The Handbook carries the stable trip shape underneath them, so one cancelled programme does not collapse the holiday.
Trip Build and €99 support both include the complete Handbook at no extra cost.
