23 JUNE NIGHT · 24 JUNE HOLIDAY · DESK VERIFIED
Joninės: stay awake until sunrise.
Lithuania has reasons.
One night when folklore stops being a museum category and becomes something people actually do: weave, sing, burn, float, jump, dance and wait for the sun to come back.
Kernavė if you want the ritual. Jonava if you want the party. The correct arrival time is late afternoon. The correct departure time is a philosophical question.
The old vocabulary
Fire, water, herbs, wreaths, dew and one botanically uncooperative fern.
Rasos / Joninės sit on the shortest nights of the year. Traditional elements include gathering herbs, weaving wreaths, floating them on water, lighting bonfires, jumping the fire, searching for the mythical fern blossom and greeting sunrise. In Kernavė the modern revival has been celebrated according to archaic Baltic customs since 1967.
The beautiful serious one.
In 2026 the programme ran from herb gathering at 17:00 through sunset rites, bonfires, midnight wreath-floating, 03:00 fire-jumping and a 04:30 sunrise greeting.
The big extrovert.
Jonava calls itself the capital of Joninės, creates a one-day “Republic of Johns”, mixes traditional courtyards and wreath-making with major concerts, spectacle and a very large crowd.
Stay after dark.
If you leave at 21:30 because you have “seen the folk dancing”, you have attended the introduction and missed the sentence.
When
23 June night → 24 June public holiday.
Long light does not mean warm night.
Bring a layer for after midnight, something for rain and insect repellent if you are staying in a river valley until sunrise. The night is short enough without spending it negotiating with mosquitoes.
Sources & checks
Tradition deserves the same fact-checking as train times.
Trust rule: fixed public-holiday dates and historical customs are desk-verified. Event programmes, opening hours and one-off city schedules can change; where a future programme is not yet published, this guide says so instead of inventing one.
If I could put a first-time visitor into only one Lithuanian traditional celebration, Kernavė on Rasos night would be near the top. It has landscape, ritual and darkness arriving just late enough to make the fire feel earned.
ARRIVE: 17:00–19:00 · STAY: past midnight · BRING: layer + repellent

The calendar should improve the route, not take it hostage.
Dates and events stay live on the site. The Handbook carries the stable trip shape underneath them, so one cancelled programme does not collapse the holiday.
Trip Build and €99 support both include the complete Handbook at no extra cost.
