28 NOV–27 DEC MARKET · 24–26 DEC HOLIDAYS
Lithuanian Christmas has a public face.
Its heart is behind the front door.
Vilnius does lights, markets and an excellent winter city break. Lithuania does something deeper on 24 December: a family table carrying Christian ritual, older seasonal customs and the dead quietly remembered among the living.

Come to Vilnius for the public Christmas atmosphere. Understand Lithuania through Kūčios. They are related experiences, but not the same product with different lighting.
The part tourists can join
Vilnius · 28 November–27 December 2026.
The 2026 Vilnius festive season opens on 28 November with the tree lighting. The Cathedral Square Christmas Market is confirmed through 27 December, with a Christmas train from 28 November to 6 January, an ice rink in Town Hall Square and additional design and charity events.

The part that explains Lithuania
Kūčios is not “Christmas Eve dinner”. It is the centre of the family ritual.
24 December is a public holiday. Traditionally the table has twelve dishes, often without meat or dairy, with fish, mushrooms, grains, peas, beetroot, poppy-seed milk and kūčiukai. Families share the Christmas wafer; hay may be placed under the tablecloth; older customs include fortune-telling and leaving the table set in connection with remembrance of the dead.
Kūčios.
Private, family-centred and much quieter than a tourist Christmas Eve. Expect closures and book any restaurant plan very deliberately.
Christmas.
Both are public holidays. Churches, family visits and a slow city rhythm matter more than aggressive sightseeing.
Vilnius lights + market.
Do the market, skate, walk the Old Town after dark and use cafés as scheduled central heating.
Snow would be lovely. Do not invoice Lithuania if it rains.
The national December mean is just below freezing. Snow is possible, but a wet, dark +2°C evening is also completely Lithuanian. Good boots improve Christmas more reliably than optimism.
Sources & checks
Tradition deserves the same fact-checking as train times.
Trust rule: fixed public-holiday dates and historical customs are desk-verified. Event programmes, opening hours and one-off city schedules can change; where a future programme is not yet published, this guide says so instead of inventing one.
Christmas is absolutely worth a winter trip, especially to Vilnius. Just do not confuse public decorations with Kūčios themselves. The most Lithuanian part of Christmas is the part a stranger cannot simply buy a ticket to.

The calendar should improve the route, not take it hostage.
Dates and events stay live on the site. The Handbook carries the stable trip shape underneath them, so one cancelled programme does not collapse the holiday.
Trip Build and €99 support both include the complete Handbook at no extra cost.
