Užgavėnės

LITHUANIAN YEAR · TRADITIONS WORTH YOUR DATES
The dates when Lithuania stops being a destination and starts behaving like itself: noisy, solemn, pagan, Catholic, maritime, patriotic, hungry and occasionally dressed as a devil.
If your dates are flexible, plan Lithuania around Rasos in Kernavė for old ritual, Jūros šventė for scale, Užgavėnės in Rumšiškės for glorious nonsense, Kaziukas for crafts, and Vėlinės for the most quietly unforgettable cultural moment. Christmas is excellent too — but Kūčios themselves are a family table, not a public show.
Masks, pancakes, Morė on the fire and Kanapinis beating Lašininis because spring has contractual obligations.
Vilnius turns roughly five kilometres of streets into crafts, food, verbos and the annual proof that Lithuanians will browse outdoors in almost any weather.
Wreaths, herbs, bonfires, dew, a fern flower nobody has yet submitted to botany and sunrise if you have the stamina.
A state holiday with a surprisingly simple climax: at 9pm people across Lithuania and abroad sing the national anthem together.
Ships, processions, concerts, maritime ceremonies and Lithuania’s largest summer fair. Book the bed first. Then think about everything else.
Cemeteries become fields of candlelight. Beautiful, communal and absolutely not a theme park.
The market is public. Kūčios are family. Knowing the difference is the difference between seeing Christmas lights and understanding Lithuanian Christmas.
City squares, bars, dinners and — in Vilnius — a recent tradition of projection and light rather than a municipal fireworks barrage.
Weather is part of the event
February averages −2.5°C nationally; June 15.9°C; July 18.3°C; November 2.6°C; December −1.1°C. July is also the wettest month in the national climate normal at 84 mm. Translation: the Sea Festival can be glorious in a T-shirt and still justify a rain shell five minutes later.
The fairs worth knowing
The essential one: crafts, verbos, ceramics, wood, food and a city-centre market with more than four centuries behind it. 2027: 5–7 March.
The 2026 fair brought roughly 700 traders into central Klaipėda. It is the market inside a much bigger maritime festival rather than the entire reason to go.
2026: Cathedral Square from 28 November to 27 December. Come for the evening atmosphere, not because Europe has a shortage of wooden huts selling hot drinks.
Different calendar
This page is the Lithuanian ritual year. The separate culture guide covers galleries, stages and arts festivals — including what needs advance tickets.

Trust rule: fixed public-holiday dates and historical customs are desk-verified. Event programmes, opening hours and one-off city schedules can change; where a future programme is not yet published, this guide says so instead of inventing one.
Do not add all eight to one trip unless you own a time machine. But if your travel dates overlap one, do not treat it as background noise. Lithuania explains itself unusually well through the way it celebrates.

FROM THIS PAGE TO THE WHOLE TRIP
Dates and events stay live on the site. The Handbook carries the stable trip shape underneath them, so one cancelled programme does not collapse the holiday.
Trip Build and €99 support both include the complete Handbook at no extra cost.
