Eat in the castle.
Sleep in the castle.
Stop proving you can drive back.

This is the natural finale to the Nemunas road: a residential castle with uprising history, a restored old kitchen, a modern restaurant named Kuknia, an artists’ residence and guest rooms that make the “return to Kaunas” question pleasantly unnecessary.

Small Lithuania, properly.

Not nine attractions to collect. Nine reasons to slow the road down — with food, river, history and enough context to know what deserves your time.

The route finale

It has arrow slits. It looks defensive. It was built as a residence.

Panemunė Castle was begun in the early 17th century by the Eperješ family, merchants of Hungarian origin. Despite the fortified appearance, national tourism material emphasises that this was a luxurious residential castle rather than a national defensive fortress. Later, the Gelgaudas family reshaped it dramatically.

1831 changes everything

Antanas Anupras Gelgaudas became a leader of the 1830–1831 uprising.

After the uprising failed, the Russian Empire confiscated his property. The castle declined, changed hands, survived war and land reform, and restoration work begun in the 20th century continues in stages.

The castle is not pretending the past ended.

Today it belongs to the Vilnius Academy of Arts ecosystem and functions simultaneously as museum-gallery, artists’ residence, guest house and restaurant. That contemporary use is one of the reasons the place feels alive rather than sealed in heritage varnish.

A castle that contains artists, hotel guests and dinner is doing more useful work than a castle containing only laminated arrows.

The kitchen has its own vocabulary

Kuknia is not a cute invented restaurant name.

The restored late-18th-century kitchen exhibition uses the historical room names: kuknia for the main kitchen, piekarnė for the bakery, spižarnė for food storage and kuknios stancija for the kitchen chamber. The castle notes that the Gelgaudas kitchen could already reflect the French cuisine nouvelle direction spreading through elite Lithuanian households from the mid-18th century.

The modern restaurant Kuknia operates in the castle/residence complex. Current official hours vary by season, so check before arriving hungry and emotionally committed.

☾ DO NOT DRIVE BACK

You can sleep in the castle now.

Since September 2024, the western building has offered 12 guest rooms. Breakfast is served by Kuknia for an extra charge, and the residence shares the site with the Academy’s creative programme.

Stay because the route improves.

Once dinner, the park at dusk and a room are in the same place, a late return to Kaunas is not efficiency. It is voluntarily deleting the best part of the evening.

One room is inside the history.

The exhibition route notes that part of Gelgaudas’ former private apartment has become hotel accommodation. Heritage tourism occasionally gets the memo: people like sleeping in the story.

Legend corner

Vytenis and Vikinda may be buried in the park. “May” is doing the responsible work here.

Two mounds in the southern park became associated with Grand Duke Vytenis and his wife Vikinda in later historical memory. The castle itself presents this as a purported burial tradition, not established archaeology. Keep the legend; keep the label.

Sources & checks

History is funnier when it is true.

Trust rule: historical and practical claims are desk-verified unless a dated field-check badge says otherwise. Restaurant menus, ferry operation and opening hours can change; use the primary source before travelling.

VYTAS’ VERDICT

Panemunė is the rare heritage stop where the practical advice is as good as the history: arrive with time, see the apartments and old kitchen, climb when the tower is open, eat at Kuknia and stay if the room works for your budget. The whole point of a road trip is eventually finding somewhere good enough to stop.
