SLOW ROAD · KAUNAS → PANEMUNĖ

Follow the Nemunas.
Do not rush the country between the cities.

Nine places west of Kaunas that explain Lithuania better together than any one of them can alone: pine resorts, river towns, hillforts, manor gossip, castle kitchens and one very good reason not to drive back.

FOLLOW THE NEMUNASFollow the NemunasOne river. One good reason to stop.
Panemunė Castle, its ponds, the surrounding village and the Nemunas River seen from above in 2025

The finale makes more sense when you can see the geography: castle, park and the Nemunas in one frame.

Follow the Nemunas · 9 chapters

Small Lithuania, properly.

Not nine attractions to collect. Nine reasons to slow the road down — with food, river, history and enough context to know what deserves your time.

The mistake

Do not treat the river road as dead space between Kaunas and a castle.

The smaller places are the point. This is where interwar resort culture, medieval defence lines, Jewish-town history, aristocratic eccentricity, food and the Nemunas itself stop being separate museum labels and start sharing the same afternoon.

Route A · easy Kaunas loop

Pines, villas, ferry, lunch.

Use this when you have half a day to one easy day from Kaunas.

  1. Raudondvaris — manor + orangery lunch
  2. Kačerginė — interwar pine resort
  3. Zapyškis — Gothic church + open riverbank
  4. Kulautuva — old resort + forest
  5. Vilkija — hills + seasonal ferry

Warm-season trick: Zapyškis and Kulautuva have seasonal river/ferry connections. Check the current operation before designing the day around it.

Route B · the full Panemunė day

Hillforts, castles, dinner, bed.

Use this when the road itself is the itinerary.

  1. Raudondvaris — start with civilisation
  2. Vilkija — river panorama
  3. Seredžius — Palemonas Hill + Al Jolson story
  4. Veliuona — hillforts + Gediminas legend
  5. Raudonė — tower + park + unexpectedly good gossip
  6. Panemunė Castle — museum + Kuknia + sleep in the castle

Best ending: do not drive back because a spreadsheet says you can. Panemunė now has rooms.

Why this series exists

The country between the cities is not filler.

Kačerginė looked lonely on its own because it was being asked to carry an entire idea: that Lithuania becomes especially good when you stop chasing headline attractions. The answer was not to make Kačerginė louder. It was to show its neighbours.

Nine places, nine different reasons.

Kačerginė is about breathing. Zapyškis is about space. Kulautuva is about the strange confidence of interwar resort Lithuania. Vilkija is about geography. Seredžius is about how a tiny town can end up in Hollywood history. Veliuona is about the medieval state becoming landscape. Raudonė is a castle with a social life. Panemunė is where the road finally gives you permission to stop.

If the only thing you remember is “another castle”, I have failed. If you remember the Chinese mandarin from Raudondvaris, the Lithuanian-born Broadway colossus from Seredžius and the castle kitchen called a kuknia, we are getting somewhere.

If you only have one day

The version I would actually recommend.

Morning · Raudondvaris

Walk the manor before lunch. The count who travelled through Africa and Asia, became a serious photographer and received a mandarin title in China gives you more to talk about than the tower alone.

Middle · Veliuona

Use one hill town to understand why the Nemunas was strategic geography rather than decorative scenery.

Evening · Panemunė Castle

Castle, park, old kitchen, dinner at Kuknia and — if the day has gone well — a room instead of headlights back to Kaunas.

Sources & checks

History is funnier when it is true.

Trust rule: historical and practical claims are desk-verified unless a dated field-check badge says otherwise. Restaurant menus, ferry operation and opening hours can change; use the primary source before travelling.

VYTAS’ VERDICT

This is the road I would give somebody who says they have already “done Kaunas” and wants the country to start feeling personal. The famous objects are useful, but the connective tissue is better: a pine resort, a ferry, a Broadway origin story, a grand duke’s disputed grave, an orangery lunch and finally a castle where dinner and bed are in the same plan.
