Start in Vilnius, use Trakai as the lake-and-history day, then take the fast train to Kaunas. No rental car needed. No suitcase choreography every six hours.
Three days is enough to understand why you should come back.
Worth doing? Yes — if you resist adding Nida, the Hill of Crosses, Druskininkai and somebody's aunt's village.
Car? No. Rail + local transport wins.
Value for money: Excellent.
Tourist-trap risk: Low if you treat Trakai as more than a castle-and-kibinas conveyor belt.
Vilnius → Trakai → Kaunas
The order is deliberate: settle into Lithuania on foot, spend day two on the water and history, then finish with a city that changes the visual language completely.
Vilnius, properly
Walk the Old Town without trying to enter every church, cross into Užupis, choose one serious museum or viewpoint, and use dinner to meet contemporary Lithuania rather than just heritage cuisine.
Fun fact: Vilnius is one of the unusual European capitals where hot-air balloons can fly over the historic city when conditions allow.
Trakai beyond the postcard
Castle first, then Karaite history, kibinai and the lake. Add a boat or a long water-edge walk. The day should feel like a change of pace, not another urban checklist.
Fun fact: Galvė has 21 islands — and one old local legend claims the lake once demanded a human head before freezing or thawing.
Kaunas, properly
Take the train, then switch eras: interwar modernism, an Art Deco interior, a proper lunch, the confluence or a funicular, and — if your interests lean that way — science, bunkers, Pažaislis, Michelin-listed food or modern sauna culture.
Fun fact: Kaunas' interwar modernist architecture is UNESCO-listed — a physical record of the period when the city had to behave like a capital almost overnight.
For the cleanest version, spend the first two nights in Vilnius and either finish in Kaunas or return by train after dinner. If your flight leaves from Vilnius next morning, the return is easy enough.
This is one of the rare trips where public transport is not a compromise.
Vilnius and Kaunas are linked by frequent rail; LTG also operates a non-stop Express service on selected departures. Trakai is naturally paired with Vilnius. Re-check the current timetable because engineering works can temporarily alter services.
Vilnius ↔ Kaunas
Use rail unless you specifically need a car for luggage, small children or a countryside add-on. City-centre-to-city-centre is the point.
PreferredThe train is not the budget compromise here; it is the grown-up option. Centre to centre, no parking archaeology, and you arrive in Kaunas with enough goodwill left to enjoy it.
From Vilnius side
Train or bus works; the castle area is walkable from the town. From Kaunas, Trakai is less elegant as a simple out-and-back, which is why the Kaunas-start route relocates to Vilnius first.
Route order mattersFrom Vilnius, Trakai is almost indecently easy. The bad plan is arriving at lunchtime with every coach group and treating Karaim culture as a pastry garnish.
Use it surgically
Airport arrival, late dinner, tired children, rain. A €10–20 taxi that saves a bad hour can be better value than proving a philosophical point about buses.
Convenience, not defaultUse taxis like punctuation, not prose. A €15 ride that rescues a wet evening is sensible; using one for every walkable kilometre merely converts curiosity into upholstery.
Three days should feel good, not cheap.
Excludes international flights. Accommodation is the big variable. These are planning ranges, not live quotes.
Simple room, trains/buses, casual meals, castle/museum choices and lots of walking. Good trip; no backpacker suffering required.
Comfortable hotel, good dinners, taxis when useful, main admissions and enough margin to say yes to a boat, Art Deco tour or better meal.
Boutique stay, premium dining, private experiences and less timetable-watching. The country remains easy even when you remove friction.
Three small things that make the trip feel less generic.
Every day gets one thing you probably did not put on the original list.
Give each city a different sound.
Vilnius can take something contemporary and moody; Kaunas can take jazz, classical music or whatever is actually playing at the Philharmonic. A trip gets more memorable when places acquire a soundtrack.
Kibinai belong in Trakai, not as homework everywhere.
Eat one there because the Karaite story gives it context. In Vilnius and Kaunas, let modern Lithuanian cooking, seasonal produce and good local restaurants do more of the talking.
Buy something you will actually use.
Good linen, local design, ceramics, a food product you tried and liked, or a small piece from a museum/design shop beats a souvenir with a laser-printed castle.
Leave 90 minutes unscheduled.
That is enough time for a market, a boat, a coffee that turns into another coffee, or a local recommendation. It is also how a trip stops looking like somebody else's itinerary.

If you can book a hotel and buy a train ticket, you can do this trip. The paid layer only makes sense if you want the decisions removed or the day enriched.

Three days is enough for a country, not for this country — but it is enough for a very good weekend, provided you stop trying to see everything. Vilnius, one castle, one other city, and no motorway heroics. The failure mode is always the same: somebody adds the coast, spends six hours in a car, and returns home convinced Lithuania is mostly a road.
