PALANGA · THE GOOD VERSION

Palanga is much better
once you leave Basanavičiaus Street.

A Tiškevičiai-built resort, one of Northern Europe’s loveliest parks, a palace full of amber, a pagan hill wrapped in legend, a rebuilt Kurhaus and — in 2026 — two new Michelin Guide restaurant additions.

RESORT, NOT FUNFAIRPines

Then dinner. Then sunset.

West Coast Detour · 5 chapters

The coast is not one beach.

Klaipėda gives you the city, Karklė the raw coast, Palanga the resort, Kretinga the historical surprise and Šventoji the quieter oddball ending.

The short answer

The best Palanga is the one the loudest street keeps distracting you from.

Start with Birutė Park, the Tiškevičiai palace and Birutė Hill. Let the pier be the evening punctuation mark, not the whole sentence.

Minimum: 5 hours.

Better: stay the night and let the resort work after day visitors leave.

19th century

The Tiškevičiai decide Palanga should become a resort.

The family built infrastructure, park, palace, harbour, spa facilities and church, turning a coastal settlement into a deliberate resort project rather than waiting for tourism to happen by accident.

1877 onward

The Kurhaus becomes the social engine.

Restaurant, hotel, reading room, billiards, games, dances, performances and eventually the resort administration. The building burned in 2002; the brick part returned in 2013 and the restored wooden part reopened in 2021.

1897

The palace rises inside a French-designed landscape.

Eduard François André designed the park for the Tiškevičiai. The Neo-Renaissance palace now houses the Amber Museum.

Now

The resort has finally caught up gastronomically.

The 2026 Michelin Guide added both Monist and Palanga to its main selection. Beach town no longer has to mean emergency pizza.

Birutė Park

The reset button. Ponds, mature pines, formal views and enough space to make you forget you are minutes from the resort’s loudest strip.

Amber Museum

More than 30,000 exhibits in the former Tiškevičiai palace, including one of the world’s major collections of amber inclusions.

Birutė Hill

Archaeology, a former pagan sanctuary and the legend of Birutė — priestess, wife of Kęstutis and mother of Vytautas. Treat the burial story as legend, not GPS data.

Kurhaus

The old resort heart: destroyed by fire, rebuilt rather than replaced by something with reflective glass and a terrible logo.

What I would do after 17:00

Dinner first. Pier second.

For a special dinner, the 2026 Michelin Guide now lists Restaurant Palanga and Monist. After that, walk to the sea. The pier is far more convincing when it is sunset scenery rather than something you have queued to photograph at 14:00.

Sources & checks

The good stories are better when they survive a fact-check.

Trust rule: Historical and practical claims are desk-verified unless a dated field-check badge says otherwise. Opening hours, restaurants and seasonal services can change; check the primary source before travelling.

VYTAS’ VERDICT

Palanga has two personalities. One sells waffles, flashing toys and the idea that every holiday needs a loudspeaker. The other has a French-designed park, Tiškevičiai palace, amber, pines, very good hotels and increasingly serious food. I am recommending the second one. You are free to visit the first for anthropological purposes.

A hotel is only one decision.

The more expensive mistake is giving the wrong place the night. The Handbook chooses the base first, then asks what the room is supposed to do.

Trip Build and €99 support both include the complete Handbook at no extra cost.
