Kaunas → Panevėžys → Bauska → Riga
Stay on the E67. This is the least complicated line and the correct answer if Riga is merely lunch and Tallinn is where the bed is.
The E67/Via Baltica is the obvious north–south spine. Use it when speed matters. Leave it briefly when Lithuania gives you a better idea.
Poland is temporarily checking its border with Lithuania until 1 October 2026. This is still a Schengen journey, but “there is no border” is presently bad practical advice. Carry your passport or national ID and do not schedule a flight connection as if Budzisko were a teleportation device.
Warsaw to Tallinn on the Via Baltica corridor is roughly 970 km. It can be driven. So can Birmingham to Inverness. The existence of a steering wheel does not make either a holiday plan.
Best one-night split: Kaunas if you are coming from Poland; Riga if you already entered Lithuania early. Best two-night split: Kaunas + Riga, or Kaunas + Pärnu if Riga is already familiar.
Road quality · 2026 reality
| Section | Vytas' road grade | What the road actually is | What to expect now |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warsaw → Lithuanian border | A | S8/S61. Poland completed its entire 310 km Via Baltica section as dual-carriageway express road in October 2025. | Fastest and easiest part of the trip. A standard passenger car up to 3.5 t does not use e-TOLL on this route. Heavy campers and unusual car–trailer combinations are a separate case: check the current e-TOLL rules before departure. |
| Polish border → Kaunas | A− | The rebuilt A5 south of Marijampolė is four-lane. The remaining weak link near Garliava–Mauručiai is now being rebuilt. | Allow for roadworks on the 6.86 km Garliava–Mauručiai section through 2027. |
| Kaunas → Latvian border | B | A8/A17/A10. Mostly one lane each way; the four-lane conversion is still in planning, not finished infrastructure. | Trucks, overtakes, changing limits. A8 also has a 14 km repair project scheduled through the end of 2026. |
| Latvian border → Riga | B | A7 is still largely 1+1. The Ķekava bypass is the modern exception, with 12.22 km of four-lane road. | Bauska and Iecava remain the old bottleneck logic; a Bauska bypass is planned/tendered, not something you can drive yet. |
| Riga → Pärnu | B | Mostly two-lane A1/E67. Straightforward, coastal-ish, not motorway. | Easy driving; use Pärnu as the civilised interruption before Estonia turns the construction cones on. |
| Pärnu → Tallinn | B− | Estonia is actively building 45 km of new 2+2 sections in 2026–27. | The Estonian road authority currently tells drivers to budget about 30–45 extra minutes between Pärnu and Tallinn. |
Translation: nobody should describe the whole Warsaw–Tallinn route as “motorway”. Poland increasingly is. Southern Lithuania increasingly is. Much of Lithuania north of Kaunas, Latvia and Estonia still is not.
The important choice north of Kaunas
Stay on the E67. This is the least complicated line and the correct answer if Riga is merely lunch and Tallinn is where the bed is.
This gives the transit day a plot. The Hill of Crosses already has a full Lithuania Unscripted guide; Rundāle Palace sits only 12 km from Bauska if you stay on the eastern route instead. Do one idea properly, not both at motorway speed.
Stops that earn the brake pedal
BEST TRANSIT BASE
Almost on the corridor, genuinely worth a city break, excellent food, interwar modernism, a compact old town and enough substance that an overnight does not feel like logistical surrender.
Open details →FOR PEOPLE WHO HATE GENERIC STOPS
A castle, a half-kilometre footbridge and karst country where the ground literally collapses into sinkholes. Kirkilai has more than 200 sinkholes per sq km in places. This is a detour with geology, not another old-town coffee.
THE BEST LATVIAN ROAD BREAK
Rundāle is 12 km from Bauska. If you have enough time for one serious stop between Kaunas and Riga, a baroque palace is a more persuasive argument than a service station sausage.
THE OBVIOUS MIDDLE
Use it as a real night, not “arrive at 22:40, see the Old Town before breakfast, flee”. The Baltic capitals punish stamp collecting beautifully.
THE SMART ESTONIAN BREAK
Roughly midway between Riga and Tallinn, with a real beach, spas and enough town to justify stopping. Especially useful in 2026–27 while roadworks make the northern leg slower.
WHEN KAUNAS IS TOO FAR
If you hit northeastern Poland late, stop before the border instead of turning the last two hours into a fatigue experiment. The motorway will still be there in the morning.
Where I would sleep
The route stop that is also a destination. Best compromise between progress and having an evening.
Obvious because it is obvious. Give it a night, not a petrol receipt and a photograph of the House of the Black Heads.
Excellent if Tallinn is tomorrow. Sea, spa, dinner, then finish Estonia with daylight and patience.
Perfectly usable if fatigue wins. I would not redesign a holiday around it purely because the odometer requested democracy.
Tolls, borders, currencies
Lithuania does not charge its road-user fee to M1 passenger cars. Latvia's vignette applies to goods vehicles above the stated weight thresholds. Estonia's road-user charge is for heavy goods vehicles over 3.5 t. If you are in an ordinary car, there is no three-country sticker ritual.
Polish e-TOLL is aimed at heavy vehicles; vehicles up to 3.5 t are not required to use it. Private motorway concessions elsewhere in Poland can charge cars, but the Via Baltica S8/S61 spine is not the A2/A4 concession problem people warn you about.
Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia use the euro. Poland does not. The cultural border may be subtle; your banking app will notice immediately.
Poland's temporary controls with Lithuania are extended to 1 October 2026. Keep ID accessible and re-check before travel. The current temporary control covered here is the Poland–Lithuania border; temporary arrangements can change, so re-check official border information before the day you travel.
If winter is involved
In June this corridor can feel absurdly easy because daylight refuses to go home. In December the same 300 km contains darkness, spray, black ice risk and trucks whose rear lights become your longest relationship of the evening. Lithuania also has seasonal tyre rules and permanent headlight requirements; read the dedicated driving guide before treating January like July with a coat.
Sources & checks
Trust rule: road construction and border controls are dated facts, not eternal prose. Re-check them before a long drive. The overnight and detour choices are editorial judgement, not official rankings.
Via Baltica is good enough to make the Baltics feel close and slow enough to punish anyone who confuses “one road” with “one day”. Use Kaunas as Lithuania’s front door, Riga as the middle chapter and Pärnu when Estonia needs breathing room. If you cross Lithuania without stopping because Latvia or Estonia was the target, the road worked and the trip failed.

FROM THIS PAGE TO THE WHOLE TRIP
The Handbook puts transport inside the whole route: where rail wins, where the last five kilometres become the problem, and where a car finally starts earning its keep.
Trip Build and €99 support both include the complete Handbook at no extra cost.
