TELŠIAI · ŽEMAITIJA · OPEN-AIR HISTORY
Žemaitija makes more sense when you walk through a village, not a paragraph.
The Samogitian Village Museum is the Telšiai stop Lithuania Unscripted was missing: 8.5 hectares by Lake Mastis, 16 historic buildings, three farmstead ensembles, a forge, mill, cemetery, gardens and animals — enough context to turn “Samogitia” from a word on the map into a place.
Why put it in the route?
This is not a glass-case museum pretending a butter churn can carry an afternoon. The late-19th/early-20th-century village setting lets architecture, tools, gardens, livestock and seasonal traditions do the explaining. It is particularly useful for foreign visitors because regional identity becomes visible without requiring a lecture first.
Vytas: Lithuania has several open-air museums. This one earns its place because it explains Žemaitija while you are actually in Žemaitija — revolutionary stuff, apparently.
Who should choose it?
Choose it: families, slow travellers, architecture/folk-culture people, anyone already routing through Telšiai, Plungė or Žemaitija National Park. Skip or shorten it: if you have only enough time in Telšiai for the old town and lakefront, or if relentless rain has converted “open air” from a museum type into a threat.
Practical shape
Allow roughly 1.5–2 hours if you want the place to work rather than sprinting between buildings. The museum is at Malūno g. 5 in Telšiai. Its official 2026 visitor information lists seasonal hours and a €5 standard admission; check the museum directly before travel because hours and closure dates change.
