Arrive, drop the bag, walk into the temporary-capital story.
Do the centre on foot: Laisvės alėja, modernist façades, the shift from imperial provincial town to a capital that had to invent itself quickly. Do not start with a taxi tour of “top sights”.

Make dinner say something about Kaunas now.

Architecture outside is half the story. Pair the modernist walk with an interior experience such as the Art Deco Museum when availability fits.

Mokslo Sala for design/science, or move east to Pažaislis and the lagoon if the weather deserves it. The second option can flow naturally into Monte Pacis rather than creating a separate dinner commute.

Fluxus, AUDRA, Žalgiris, a concert or nothing at all. Check What's On before booking the Saturday. A strong event can be the reason to reverse the whole day.

If your flight/train is later, Birštonas is the kind of extension that earns a half-day only when you want spa, river and food together. If not, stay in Kaunas and enjoy not travelling.

VYTAS’ VERDICT
The most underrated 36 hours in the Baltics, and the one that surprises people who came for Vilnius. An entire city centre of 1930s modernism built to prove a young country existed, a medieval old town where two rivers meet, street art that is genuinely good rather than municipally approved, and the loudest arena in the region. Kaunas does not perform for visitors, which is exactly why it works.
