Lithuania / Experiences / Catch your dinner

Catch it. Hand it to the kitchen. Try not to become unbearable about it.

Lithuania has the serious angler’s version of fishing and the much more holiday-friendly version where your trout or sturgeon goes from pond to plate. Here is how to choose without turning lunch into fisheries legislation.

The Facts

Easiest first-timerTonyResort · trout + kitchen · Trakai district
For actual anglersKarpynė · long sessions + smoking · Raseiniai district
Family versionGreen Valley Molėtai · sturgeon + grill

There are two entirely different things hiding under the word “fishing” in Lithuania. One is a state or leased lake where permits, species rules and timing matter. The other is a stocked private pond where the whole point can be wonderfully uncomplicated: catch fish, hand fish over, eat fish. Do not confuse the rules — or the expectations.

01 — Four versions worth knowing

EASIEST · TRAKAI

TonyResort

Trout pond, gear and bait supplied, then the kitchen prepares the catch. Best for couples, families and people who want the story more than the tackle catalogue.

Price warning: official TonyResort pages currently disagree: €39/kg on the dedicated fishing page versus €45/kg on the leisure page. Call first.

ANGLER’S VERSION · RASEINIAI

Karpynė

This is not a decorative pond next to dinner. Current 2026 prices list full fishing sessions on the Big Pond at €40 to 19:00 or €45 to 21:00 (€33 Mondays), with up to 5 kg included; extra fish is €8.50/kg. Gutting and smoking is listed at €15 per fish, minimum three fish for smoking.

Use it when fishing is the activity — especially on a westbound/A1 road day — not as a two-hour detour from Trakai.

FAMILY · MOLĖTAI

Green Valley Molėtai

Sturgeon fishing with the simplest possible ending: they grill what you catch. The current published price is €35 for 3 hours, +€15/kg for fish and €5 rod rental; reservation is required. There is also a small animal area, which makes this the least “Dad has disappeared with rods for seven hours” option.

LOCAL LEAD · CALL FIRST

Aukštadvaris direction: “Pirtis prie krioklio”

A current directory listing in Trakai district, near Lake Drabužis, says guests can catch sturgeon, trout or carp and have the catch smoked. That is exactly the kind of Lithuania story worth chasing — but the evidence is a directory listing, not a robust official booking system.

My rule: treat it as a lead, phone first, confirm the fishing and smoking are operating that day, then go. Do not drive 45 km on the strength of an old paragraph on the internet.

02 — Which one would I choose?

Want the odd local storyAukštadvaris leadSturgeon/trout/carp + smoking sounds excellent — but call first because verification is weaker.

03 — Private pond or wild water? Very different admin.

For state water, Lithuania’s Environmental Protection Department says the permit depends on the status of the water body. The ordinary amateur fisherman’s ticket covers state-owned unleased waters where limited fishing is not organised; leased and limited waters use different permits/cards.

Foreign visitors are not locked out by Lithuanian banking. The Department says permits can also be bought through Maxima or Perlas using the visitor’s data, and another person can buy many ALIS permits on behalf of a foreigner. Current July 2026 guidance lists the ordinary fisherman’s ticket at €3 for two days, €10 for a month, €30 for a year.

The useful shortcut

If your actual goal is “my child catches a fish and we eat it”, book a private stocked pond. If your goal is “I want to fish Lithuania”, learn the water and permit rules. Those are different holidays wearing the same hat.

04 — What I’d skip

  • “Just cast in any lake.” Lithuania has a lot of water. It also has rules.
  • Assuming catch-and-release is always allowed at a stocked food pond. Ask the operator before the hook goes in.
  • Driving across half the country for a novelty pond. Karpynė makes sense when fishing or the A1 route already makes sense.
  • Promising children a fish. Fish remain offensively uninterested in your itinerary.
  • Confusing a directory listing with a confirmed operation. “Pirtis prie krioklio” stays a local lead until the phone call upgrades it.
VERDICTFor the easiest story: TonyResort. For the fishing day: Karpynė. For children and a giant prehistoric-looking dinner: Green Valley. For wild water: buy the right permit and treat the fish as fish, not staff.

The cheat sheet

Hacks that earn their place

Hacks that earn their place

  • Private pond, no licence. Public water, licence required. Get this distinction right before you leave the house; it is the only rule that genuinely matters.
  • Call ahead. Always. These are small operations. Stock, staff and kitchens all have opinions about turning up unannounced on a Tuesday.
  • Ask what the kitchen charges to cook it before you catch anything. The fish price and the cooking price are two separate conversations, and the second one is easier to have early.
  • Take a cool bag. If you catch more than you can eat, the rest travels home. If you have no bag, the rest travels home in your hire car’s upholstery.
  • Children catch fish faster than adults because they lack shame about asking for help. Send them first and follow.
  • Wet-weather gear beats sun cream here. You are standing beside open water in the Baltics. Plan for the version of the day nobody photographs.
VYTAS’ VERDICT

Do this once and you will be insufferable about it for a fortnight. A private pond, a rod you did not have to license, a trout you personally removed from the water, and a kitchen forty metres away that turns it into dinner while you sit down and pretend the whole thing was perfectly normal. It is the shortest distance between water and plate available to a visitor in this country, and it converts sceptical teenagers faster than any museum ever built.
