Car choice · Lithuania

Do not rent a car because Lithuania has roads. Rent one when the route earns it.

For Vilnius and Kaunas, a car can be a parking bill with cup holders. For forests, lakes, manor routes and multi-base trips, it can remove hours of friction. The right answer is often no car first, then a car later.

No provider paid to appear · app zones and prices are checked in the app before travel

The shortest ruleCity only: do not rent. One flexible day: app car can win.Several rural days: compare traditional rental.

30-second chooser

Tell the route what job the car must do.

This does not calculate a fake exact price. It tells you which market to compare.

Three models

Traditional rental and car-sharing solve different problems.

TRADITIONAL RENTAL

Best when the car is yours for the trip

Wins: multi-day countryside, family luggage, remote bases, predictable possession, cross-border plans after checking terms.

Watch: deposit/card rules, excess, fuel policy, second driver, one-way fee, opening hours, airport vs city quote and the exact return location.

The catch: compare the final quote, not the €17 headline. The cheapest rate can stop being cheapest after protection, driver, airport and fuel rules.

BOLT DRIVE / CITYBEE

Best when you need a car, not a rental contract

Wins: app unlock, no desk, flexible start time, useful for a spontaneous half-day or day trip.

Watch: time + kilometres, ending zones, airport-zone charges, private parking and whether a package really beats pay-as-you-go.

The catch: the daily cap is not necessarily the final bill. Bolt Drive states that distance is charged separately; CityBee calculates time + kilometres or a package. Always price the actual distance.

SPARK

The electric specialist

Wins: EV-only fleet, public parking advantages, app access, Vilnius/Kaunas airport ending and charging included at supported networks.

Watch: range, charging geography, purple/paid zones and long-term offer terms.

The catch: a long-term SPARK offer is a different product from a casual city hop. The company says long-term offers are prepaid and non-refundable once started.

Airport or city?

Do not collect four days of car just to park it outside a hotel.

Land → road trip immediately

Airport desk makes sense. Vilnius Airport currently lists Enterprise, Europcar, Sixt, Hertz and Carwiz; cars are collected in P4. Kaunas Airport lists the same five and uses P1.

The catch: convenience can cost more. Compare the airport final quote with a city branch, especially when your first two days are urban.

City first → countryside later

Collect later. Walk, use public transport / Bolt rides, then pick up a traditional rental or app car on the morning the route leaves the city.

The catch: this saves rental days only if the city pickup does not create a heroic cross-town transfer with luggage. Compare the logistics as well as the rate.

Do not memorise this table as a tariff sheet. Car-sharing prices, zones and packages change. Use it to choose the model, then check the app on the day.

How I would choose a traditional company

Seven checks before “Book”.

  1. Final total. Include airport/location charges, protection, additional driver and one-way fees.
  2. Deposit and card. Check amount and whether the branch requires a credit card in the main driver's name.
  3. Excess. “Insurance included” and “zero liability” are not the same sentence.
  4. Fuel. Same-to-same / full-to-full is easier to audit than paying a refuelling bill later.
  5. Cross-border / one-way. Ask before building Latvia or Estonia into the route.
  6. Opening hours and flight delay. A cheap desk that closes before your delayed arrival is performance art.
  7. Photograph the car. Wheels, glass, each panel, fuel and mileage before leaving and at return.

Open the apps after choosing the model

Availability belongs to the app, not to a travel article.

Use the app to check the actual vehicle, zone, airport fee, package and end-trip rules. A screenshot from six months ago is not a pricing strategy.

Primary checks: Lithuanian Airports, Bolt Drive, CityBee, SPARK and the providers’ own terms/help pages. Commercial programmes checked separately; none is active on this page at release.

FROM THIS PAGE TO THE WHOLE TRIP

One page solves one decision. The Handbook connects the trip.

Twenty chapters join the days, bases, transport, food, destinations and things worth skipping into one offline plan. If you would rather not assemble it yourself, Trip Build applies the same judgement to your dates.

Trip Build and €99 support both include the complete Handbook at no extra cost.
