MEDICAL TRAVEL · INDEPENDENT 2026 GUIDE
The register that answers half your questions is public, free, and takes two minutes.
Almost nobody opens it.
Lithuania can offer experienced specialists, modern private clinics, shorter routes to treatment and unusually personal attention. The useful question is not whether it is “cheap”. It is whether the named clinician, licensed institution, complete price and aftercare plan survive proper checking.
Medical-tourism advertising compares the lowest foreign headline with the highest imaginable home price, then acts surprised when anaesthesia, implants, medication, hotel nights and a second flight have not volunteered to be free. This guide does the arithmetic with its shoes on.
In 2025 Lithuania received the ITB Health Tourism Award, largely recognising its spa, rehabilitation and wellness infrastructure. The latest OECD snapshot shows universal core-service coverage and a comparatively substantial medical workforce, while also recording real access and funding pressures in the domestic system. Both can be true: a strong private international-patient service does not mean every Lithuanian resident glides through healthcare on a velvet conveyor belt.
Evidence note: Lithuania does not publish a clean, current national count of foreign patients broken down by procedure. Anyone offering a beautifully precise total is probably polishing an estimate. The 290,000 figure covers all sanatorium and rehabilitation clients, not “medical tourists”.
THE CASE FILE
Four checks before the clinic shortlist.
A glossy English website is an introduction, not due diligence.
Independent research, not treatment sales
I do not organise treatment, choose a procedure, hold money intended for a clinic or book a clinic on your behalf. Deliberately. I can verify public facts, compare written offers, prepare questions and build the non-clinical journey around the timetable set by your medical team.
If I find something concerning, I show you the source and explain what remains unanswered. I do not convert a public record into a medical opinion.
Check the person and the place
Lithuania's State Health Care Accreditation Agency publishes separate information for healthcare specialists and healthcare institutions. Search the clinician by their real name and check that the institution is licensed for the relevant healthcare activity. A specialist licence does not answer the institution question; an institution listing does not identify who will actually treat you.

Same hands. Different invoice.
A British patient may see one polished international site and mistake it for the whole market. It may not be. The same doctor can work at more than one licensed institution, under different packages, waiting times and prices.
Start with the named clinician, not the clinic brand. Compare like with like: surgeon, facility, anaesthesia, device or implant, nights, medication, tests, transfers, follow-up and revision terms. Same training. Same hands. Same registration number in the same register. Different invoice.
The operation is not the whole product
The difficult question is not who answers at 10:00 on discharge day. It is who takes clinical responsibility at 22:00 on a Sunday after you return home. Demand a written aftercare plan and contact details for a named doctor, not only a helpline.
The Royal College of Surgeons warns that aftercare abroad may be difficult and says the NHS is unlikely to help unless a complication is serious and needs emergency or life-saving treatment. That is not an argument against Lithuania. It is an argument against buying an operation without buying — and understanding — the pathway around it.
WHERE LITHUANIA IS STRONGEST
Seven lanes worth investigating.
These are editorial starting points, not a paid ranking and not a clinical recommendation. A licence is the floor, not a halo.
Implants, crowns and full-mouth work
Why Lithuania: private dentistry is mature, English-facing and used to planning complex work across several visits. Published starting prices can be substantially below UK private fees, but implant brand, bone grafting, temporary teeth, laboratory work and return visits decide the real bill.
Starting points: Fi Clinica publishes international-patient dental information and an implant starting price; Odontika explicitly organises treatment for visitors; Morkūnas Dental Clinic presents a dedicated dental-tourism pathway.
Ask for a written plan naming the implant system, prosthetic material, temporary solution, guarantees, number of visits and who handles complications after you fly home.
A polished international-patient machine
Why Lithuania: Kaunas has clinics built around British, Irish and Scandinavian patients, with English coordination, bundled logistics and high procedure volumes claimed by providers. This can feel more personal than a sprawling hospital and more organised than booking a surgeon from an Instagram highlight reel.
Starting points: Nordesthetics specialises heavily in international cosmetic-surgery patients and publishes procedure prices, aftercare and revision policies. Fi Clinica combines plastic surgery with other surgical and dental services.
Do not choose by before-and-after photographs alone. Confirm the named surgeon, their Lithuanian licence, anaesthetist, hospital facilities, thrombosis plan, length of stay, revision policy and what happens when “recovery” refuses to follow the brochure.
The famous one — and the one needing grown-up aftercare
Why Lithuania: gastric sleeve, bypass and revision surgery are prominent in English-language Lithuanian medical travel. International packages often bundle tests, transfers and coordination. Forum discussions repeatedly mention Lithuania and Nordbariatric; some describe very good experiences, but a forum post remains one person's story, not an outcome registry.
Starting points: Nordbariatric is the specialised international-facing name. Meliva Kardiolita is the broader private-hospital option with bariatric and other surgical departments.
The operation is a day; nutrition, blood tests, supplements and behaviour change are years. Before paying, identify who owns long-term follow-up in your home country and obtain the full clinical record.
Hips, knees, shoulders — plus the journey home
Why Lithuania: specialist groups publish pathways for joint replacement and sports-related surgery, while private hospitals offer wider diagnostic and inpatient support. The value equation can be strong when waiting time matters.
Starting points: Nordorthopaedics focuses on international orthopaedic patients and states that most of its patients come from abroad. Meliva Kardiolita publishes procedure information and tailored quotes. Northway's overseas service publishes indicative orthopaedic tariffs.
A low operation price is irrelevant if the implant is extra, physiotherapy is vague or the return flight is clinically premature. Compare the entire recovery pathway.
Where a “package” needs more footnotes than a mortgage
Why Lithuania: established private fertility centres serve international patients and publish IVF pathways. Prices can look attractive, but medication, ICSI, freezing, storage, genetic testing and donor-related services may sit outside the headline.
Starting point: Northway Fertility Centre is the clearest international-facing Lithuanian provider in this field and its overseas channel publishes package ranges.
Ask for age-specific success measures, not one triumphant percentage. Confirm what “success” means, the number of transfers included, medication costs, legal eligibility, embryo storage and continuity after returning home.
Short procedure, serious decision
Why Lithuania: dedicated eye-clinic networks operate across Lithuania and Scandinavia, which gives international patients a more familiar service model. Laser correction is not one product: candidacy, corneal measurements, method and follow-up matter.
Starting point: Lirema offers laser correction and other ophthalmic surgery and publishes methods, follow-up and international-market pricing.
A free examination is not a guarantee that surgery is wise. Ask who says no, what happens with dry-eye or night-vision problems and where follow-up occurs after you return.
The Lithuanian category most foreigners underestimate
Why Lithuania: Druskininkai and Birštonas combine medical rehabilitation with mineral-water and spa infrastructure. This is less dramatic than surgery tourism and often more authentically Lithuanian: proper rehabilitation, clinical supervision and a pine forest instead of a recovery apartment above a kebab shop.
Starting points: Eglės sanatorija describes personalised medical rehabilitation in Druskininkai and Birštonas. The national tourism agency's 2025 award coverage is strongest in precisely this health-resort category.
Separate evidence-based rehabilitation from pleasant wellness extras. Ask which clinicians assess you, how therapy is individualised and what measurable goals will be reviewed.
WHAT THE FORUMS ACTUALLY SAY
The internet is useful. It is also the internet.
Recent and older Reddit threads about Lithuanian bariatric and cosmetic surgery show a recognisable pattern: British and Irish users investigate Lithuania because of cost and waiting time; several report smooth treatment and attentive staff; others struggle to find surgeon-specific, long-term reviews. One patient described staying long enough for another check and dressing change before flying home. Another called a bariatric experience “99% great” and deducted the missing percentage for a late airport driver — which is either reassuring or the most British medical outcome measure ever invented.
The useful signal is not “Reddit approves Lithuania”. It is that patients care about the unglamorous middle: named surgeon, response speed, transfers, accommodation, how long to remain nearby and who answers after discharge. Those are exactly the details glossy clinic pages compress into the word package.
Forum accounts are anecdotal, self-selected and unverifiable. They are included to expose recurring practical questions, never to establish safety, quality or expected outcomes.
THE VALUE ARGUMENT
Not “cheap”. Better bought.
A lower invoice is not value if it purchases the wrong operation, no aftercare and an anxious flight home.
Where Lithuania can win
- Direct access to experienced specialists
- International-patient coordination in English
- Compact Vilnius and Kaunas logistics
- Modern private facilities and competitive operating costs
- A more personal scale than a giant hospital system
- Strong rehabilitation and health-resort infrastructure
Where the advantage disappears
- A complex condition needing continuous home-team care
- No written complication or revision pathway
- Flying home too soon
- Comparing incomplete headline prices
- Choosing by social media or testimonials alone
- Sending sensitive records through insecure forms
THE 12-QUESTION TEST
Ask this before paying a deposit.
If a provider becomes misty when the questions become specific, that is already an answer.
- Is the institution licensed for this exact service?
- Who is the named clinician, and can their specialist licence be verified?
- Why is this procedure clinically appropriate for me?
- What alternatives, including doing nothing, were discussed?
- What exactly is included and excluded from the written price?
- Which implant, device, laboratory or medication costs are separate?
- Who provides anaesthesia and where is the operation performed?
- What complication facilities are available on site?
- How long should I remain in Lithuania before flying?
- Who is the named doctor after discharge, at night and after I return home?
- What is the revision, refund and cancellation policy?
- How will my full records reach my doctor at home?
Check both the specialist licence and the institution licence. UK patients should also read the NHS treatment-abroad checklist and the Royal College of Surgeons guidance on surgery abroad and aftercare before making travel arrangements.
HOW I CAN HELP
You bring the question.
I look beyond the brochure.
A clinic can explain why you should choose it. I investigate whether that explanation survives contact with the rest of the evidence.
INDEPENDENT MEANS INDEPENDENT
No clinic commissions. No preferred-provider list. No brochure repeated back to you.
I do not work for a clinic, receive referral commission or have a package I am expected to sell. A clinic can show you its surgeons, prices, testimonials and success stories. Useful — but still one organisation describing itself.
I look wider: Lithuanian-language sources, public registers, named specialists, other providers, written terms, missing costs, practical alternatives and the questions the English sales page does not answer. I use local knowledge, experience and contacts to find as much relevant, current and checkable information as reasonably possible, then turn it into a brief you can actually use.
If something looks strong, I say so. If something is unclear, contradictory or concerning, I say that too. I have no clinic relationship to protect and no referral partner to reward. You are not paying me to approve a decision you have already made. You are paying for an independent pair of local eyes before you make it.

What was checked — and what was not assumed.
Updated 5 September 2026. Official system context came from OECD, Lithuanian health authorities, Lithuania Travel, NHS and Royal College of Surgeons guidance. Procedure scope and indicative prices came from current clinic pages and were treated as provider claims, not independently audited outcomes. Forum posts were used only for recurring practical concerns.
FROM THIS PAGE TO THE WHOLE TRIP
The handbook covers the country around the appointment.
Arrival, bases, transport, food and practical Lithuania belong in the Handbook. Clinic-specific comparison and treatment-trip logistics remain a separate medical-travel planning service.
Trip Build and €99 support both include the complete Handbook at no extra cost.
