Širvinta · playful middle ground
Winding, obstacles without needing white-water bravado, and a strong feeling of wilderness close to the main cities.
Best for: people who want the paddling itself to be part of the story.

A cheap plastic boat is one of the best ways to discover how wild Lithuania can feel without travelling very far at all. The trick is choosing the river, the section and the number of hours correctly.
Vilensija · CC BY-SA 3.0Very winding, lightly populated banks, shallow fords, rocks, quick bends and long stretches where the ordinary world simply stops appearing.
I went today and came back wondering why this is not higher on every Lithuania itinerary. It is fun without needing to be extreme, genuinely wild in places, and inexpensive enough that it does not require a committee meeting with your bank account.
| Section | Approx. | Editorial use |
|---|---|---|
| Družai → Vindeikiai | ~14 km | A sensible shorter first day when you want the river without turning lunch into dinner. |
| Vindeikiai → Liukonys | ~19 km | The obvious middle-distance option on paper: enough day to feel substantial without choosing the longest punishment available. |
| Liukonys → Mančiušėnai | ~12–20 km depending operator endpoint | Shorter lower-river choice; confirm exact take-out and current conditions with the operator. |
| Viesos → Vindeikiai | ~25 km | Long day. Choose it because you want a long paddle, not because 25 sounds more impressive than 14. |
| Liukonys → Upninkai | ~26–27 km | Another full-day option with more lower-river commitment. |
Distances differ slightly between operators and routes can be changed for weather, water or obstacles. Confirm the exact start/take-out on the booking day.
Choose the mood before the operator

Forest, clear water, bends and one of the strongest landscape identities. Some stretches are regulated, so route and permit rules matter.
Best for: combining river + wooden villages + Dzūkija.
A calmer choice when the group contains beginners, children or people who think falling into a Lithuanian river is not essential cultural immersion.
Best for: confidence and flow over technical amusement.
Būka works as an Aukštaitija landscape sampler; Kiauna gives the day more movement and technical interest.
Best for: an overnight lake trip rather than an isolated activity.
Ideal when you want water without rearranging the whole trip. Neris is the gentler city line; Vilnelė is narrower and more playful.
Best for: Vilnius visitors with half a day.
Rental is often surprisingly affordable because the product is simple: kayak, paddle, life jacket and transport. One current Širvinta operator advertises two-person kayaks from roughly €35–40 depending on day.
Check: transport, parking, dry bags, child equipment and exact take-out before paying.
The decision layer
“Easy river” can become slow and scrapy in low water or much livelier after rain. Ask the operator what the actual river is doing now.
Kilometres lie politely. Bends, current, stops, children and trees all vote on arrival time. For a first day, leave some appetite for dinner.
Some of the best routes pass reserves or national-park landscapes. That is the attraction and sometimes the reason access rules exist.
A good operator makes the unromantic part disappear: car storage, launch transport and collection. Confirm it rather than discovering your car is 19 km upstream.

Rule: The Širvinta verdict is first-hand and dated. Distances, water conditions and availability remain operator/day-specific.
The most underrated thing in this entire country, and the cheapest way to feel genuinely far from everything. Lithuanian rivers are slow, shallow, forested and almost empty; you will pass more herons than people. Pick the river by appetite rather than pride — the calm ones are not the consolation prize, they are the point — and take a dry bag, because the phone always goes in eventually.
