The Brit in Lithuania: tea, weather and the dangerous absence of small talk

A Brit can survive rain, queues and understatement. Lithuania therefore looks deceptively familiar — until the cashier does not ask how your day is going and nobody apologises to a chair after bumping into it.

Britain wraps awkwardness in conversation. Lithuania sometimes saves everyone the wrapping paper.

Britain and Lithuania share enough grey weather to create false confidence. Then the conversational machinery starts behaving differently.

British politeness often uses cushioning: perhaps, sorry, cheers, lovely, not bad. Lithuanian speech can sound more direct to an English ear, while public interactions may involve less small talk. The mistake is to translate tone literally rather than culturally.

For a Brit, this can be wonderfully efficient once the shock wears off. Nobody needs a three-act play before telling you the soup has finished. On the other hand, if you ask a Lithuanian friend whether your plan is stupid, you may receive a level of product testing you were not emotionally prepared for.
