America in the sauna: Lithuania has been arguing with emigration for more than a century

“America” entered Lithuanian imagination long before cheap flights and WhatsApp. People left, sent money, returned with habits and ideas, and were sometimes admired and mocked in equal measure. Migration did not sit outside Lithuanian culture; it helped reshape everyday life.

The suitcase has been one of Lithuania’s most influential pieces of furniture.

Lithuania’s relationship with America did not begin with Silicon Valley or cheap transatlantic tickets. Economic emigration has been reshaping Lithuanian everyday life for generations.

Research on interwar rural Lithuania describes returning labour migrants bringing home experiences and cultural elements that altered everyday life and surroundings. Studies of returnees from the United States in the early 1920s also show something timeless: people came back able to admire the rebuilding of Lithuania and complain about bureaucracy at the same time.

That tension — affection plus comparison — survives. The returnee is never merely returning. He or she brings another measuring stick home in the suitcase.
